Have been re-reading At Home by Bill Bryson [0] and just started the chapter on the bathroom. He mentions that home bathrooms often smelled b/c the "u bend" [1] hadn't yet been invented. Couldn't a public urinal be designed with a water flush function + u bend to avoid the smell?
PS Highly recommend the book if you are into the history of technology both from "what series of inventions got us to here" but also "what was life like before those inventions and how were they adopted"
