Get out of their way. Software developers know how to develop. Your job as manager is to remove any obstacles that keep developers from developing. And so you manage interfering people away from your project. You head off anything that might distract your developers. You remove ceremony, and you take the heat when "management" has issues with your team or anyone in it. You put your team front and centre, and step into the shadows when it's time to harvest the fame. You're like a bouncer at a nightclub door, protecting all who are within.
